You can link your US credit card to Alipay or WeChat Pay by downloading the official apps, completing the required real-name verification with your passport, and adding your card details. Both platforms seamlessly support major US networks, including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express, for everyday purchases throughout China.
Why this happens to your system
The payment system in China relies almost entirely on QR codes rather than physical chip-and-pin credit cards. For many years, foreign travelers could not use these mobile payment platforms unless they possessed a local Chinese mainland bank account. Fortunately, both tech platforms updated their networks to support international credit cards, allowing you to use your phone just like a local user.
When you add a US credit card to these apps, the platform acts as a secure digital middleman. When a merchant scans your app, Alipay or WeChat Pay processes the transaction through your US card network in real time. Your bank sees the charge as an international transaction, while the merchant receives the funds instantly in local Chinese Yuan.
Step-by-step guide to link your cards
Because these platforms handle financial transactions, you must follow a precise setup order to ensure your account is verified and ready for travel.
Setting up Alipay
- Download and register: Install the Alipay app from your mobile app store and sign up using your US mobile phone number.
- Submit identity verification: Navigate to the Account tab in the bottom right corner, select the Settings gear icon at the top, and tap on Account and Security. Select Identity Information to upload a clear photo of your US passport and complete the live facial recognition scan.
- Add your card: Return to the Account tab and select Bank Cards. Tap the add card symbol and enter your US credit card number, expiration date, and security code.
- Set a payment password: Create a secure six-digit numerical pin when prompted to authorize future payments.
Setting up WeChat Pay
- Locate the wallet: Open WeChat, tap the Me section at the bottom right, and select Services. Tap on Wallet and then choose Bank Cards.
- Input your details: Select Add a Bank Card and enter your 16-digit US credit card number.
- Verify your passport: Fill out your personal information exactly as it appears on your passport. The app will prompt you to upload a clear picture of your passport information page for legal verification.
- Authorize with your US bank: Complete the 3D Secure verification step, which usually requires entering a temporary verification code sent to your US phone number by your bank.
The common mistake to avoid
The single biggest error that catches travelers off guard is ignoring the local transaction fee threshold. Both platforms waive processing fees for small everyday purchases, but they apply a strict three percent service fee on any single transaction that exceeds 200 Chinese Yuan, which is roughly 28 US dollars.
To prevent unnecessary costs, split large bills into smaller individual payments under 200 Yuan whenever the merchant allows it. Additionally, check your credit card terms before you leave home. If your US card charges a standard three percent foreign transaction fee, that cost will stack on top of the app fee, meaning you could pay up to six percent extra on larger purchases. Use a card that explicitly features zero foreign transaction fees to keep your costs as low as possible.
