Renting a shared bike is one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to explore Chinese cities. The entire system is dockless, meaning you can find these bikes parked all over sidewalks and unlock them instantly with your smartphone.
You do not even need to download a separate bike app; you can manage the entire process directly inside Alipay or WeChat.
The Big Three bike networks
As you walk down the street, you will notice millions of brightly color-coded bikes. Each color belongs to a different major platform:
- Blue Bikes (Hellobike): Backed by Alibaba and accessed directly through the Alipay app. This is generally the most tourist-friendly option.
- Yellow Bikes (Meituan Bike): Run by the Meituan group, accessed via the Meituan app or a WeChat mini-program.
- Green Bikes (Qingju Bike): Run by Didi (China’s Uber), accessed via the Didi or Qingju apps.
A single ride typically costs about 1.5 RMB (around $0.20 USD) for the first 15 to 30 minutes, which will automatically deduct from your linked payment app.
Preparation: Set up your wallet first
Before you attempt to scan a bike on the street, you must ensure your primary payment app is fully verified while you have a strong internet connection.
- Verify your identity: Open Alipay or WeChat and ensure your real-name verification is complete. You will need to upload a clear photo of your passport information page.
- Link your card: Bind your international credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to your digital wallet.
- Turn off your VPN: Always temporarily disable your VPN when trying to unlock a bike. If the app detects a masked or fluctuating IP address, its security algorithm will flag the transaction as high-risk and freeze your profile.
How to unlock and ride
Once your digital wallet is ready and you are standing next to a bicycle, follow these simple steps to get moving:
- Step 1: Open the scanner. Open your Alipay or WeChat app and tap the main Scan icon located at the very top of your home screen.
- Step 2: Scan the QR code. Point your smartphone camera at the QR code printed on the center of the handlebars or near the rear wheel lock. The app will automatically read the code and open the bike’s built-in mini-program.
- Step 3: Authorize and unlock. If this is your first time using the network, the app will ask you to accept a brief terms of service agreement. Once you agree, the electronic lock on the rear wheel will automatically snap open with a loud mechanical click.
- Step 4: Check the bike. Before you pedal away, give the wheels a quick spin and test the handbrakes to make sure they work properly. If you notice a flat tire or a broken chain, manually pull the lock back down immediately. If you relock a broken bike within 60 seconds, the app will not charge you for the ride.
How to park without getting fined
Locking your bike incorrectly is the top mistake travelers make, resulting in automatic fines.
Always check the built-in map on your phone before ending your trip. You must park the bike inside a designated geofenced zone (usually highlighted in blue or green on the map) and within the white-painted rectangles physically marked on the city pavements.
Warning: If you leave your bike outside of an approved zone, the app will refuse to let you end the ride or will hit you with an automatic 5 to 20 RMB relocation penalty fee.
Once you are properly parked, manually slide the physical metal lever on the rear wheel lock downward until it clicks shut. Your app will chime, instantly end your trip timer, and display your final fare summary.
