- Check your bag size early: Before you leave for the station, measure your luggage. Bags that exceed 130 centimeters in length (or 180 centimeters for special equipment like skis) are generally too large for the train and may be rejected at security.
- Weigh your total gear: Ensure your combined luggage weight is under 20 kilograms. You may not be stopped to weigh your bags, but train staff have the right to inspect items that look excessively heavy or dangerous.
- Lift with caution: You are responsible for moving your own bags onto the train and into the racks. Staff members are not required to lift your items for you, so ensure your suitcase has reliable wheels and a comfortable handle.
- Use your seat space: If you have a small bag or a laptop case, tuck it under the seat in front of you. This is the safest spot for your most important items and keeps the overhead bins clear for other travelers.
The common mistake of ignoring aisle security
The biggest mistake travelers make is leaving large suitcases in the middle of the aisle or between rows of seats. This is strictly prohibited for safety reasons. High-speed trains have staff members who walk the aisles frequently to check tickets and monitor passenger safety. If your bag is blocking the walkway, they will ask you to move it to the end-of-carriage storage, which might be full by the time you realize it.
Another thing to avoid is leaving your bag near the exit doors. These areas must remain completely clear in case of an emergency evacuation. If you leave your luggage there, staff will insist you move it immediately. Finally, do not use luggage locks to chain your bags to the train fixtures.
